| Madonna
wrote to Berlinale: ''I would love to present 'Filth and
Wisdom' in Berlin''. |
Filth and Wisdom is the first short film directed by Madonna,
starring Richard E. Grant, Eugene Hütz, Stephen Graham,
Holly Weston, Vicky McClure, Inder Manocha and Shobu Kapoor.
It was filmed on location in London, England.
The film is currently set to premiere at the Berlin International
Film Festival on February 13, 2008. |
|
|
Described
as a comedy/drama/musical/romance, the story features a Russian immigrant,
ballet school, lap dancing, cultural revolution, poetry, night club,
punk rock band, book writer, dominatrix and gypsy.
The Gypsy punk band that appears in the film is portrayed by real-life
Gypsy punk band, Gogol Bordello, who also contributed three songs
to the film's soundtrack. The band's lead singer, Eugene Hütz,
portrays the main character — a character with a philosophical
attitude towards life. Madonna allowed additional dialogue written
by Eugene himself to be included in the film.
Filming dates: May 14, 2007 - May 29, 2007 |

| Here's
what the chief of the Berlin Film Festival, Dieter Kosslick,
said about Madonna in an interview today with German TV: |
|
|
| "Of
course I don’t know Madonna personally. But I have never recieved
a card before reading: 'Dear, Dieter. If you like my film, I would
love to present it in Berlin. Love, Madonna.' So of course I was more
than happy when I recieved it". |

And Wisdom" in 2008 Berlinale catalogue |
|
|
"Filth
And Wisdom" is about Andriy Krystiyan, or A. K. for short, who
has come to England from the Ukraine, and his two flatmates, Juliette
and Holly.
A. K. is a philosopher (at least that’s what he claims to be),
a poet, and an authority on all aspects of life. At the same time,
he is following his grand plan to become an international star. Global
stardom is how A. K. describes the goal that he and his band Gogol
Bordello are pursuing with their particular brand of boisterous gypsy
punk. For the time being, however, he makes ends meet by performing
role play in women’s clothing for straight married men.
A. K. shares a flat with two young women named Juliette and Holly.
Juliette dreams of being a kind of Florence Nightingale of the developing
world. She is currently working behind the counter at the local drug
store run by Sardeep, the Indian chemist. Holly is a trained ballerina.
Her big dream is to dance with the Royal Ballet. So far she hasn’t
been able to earn a single penny with her dancing, and continues to
‘polish’ her skills as a pole dancer at Beechman’s
Exotic Gentleman’s Club.
These three distinctive personalities are at the centre of a cinematic
tale of everyday life about people who are obliged to take on jobs
just to earn a living, but who live in hope of one day fulfilling
their dreams. But the paths to one’s goal are sometimes circuitous.
And whether we take the path of wisdom or the path of filth, we will
eventually arrive at the same enlightened place. |

| The Rolling
Stones and Madonna will rub shoulders with Penelope Cruz and Scarlett
Johansson as next month's Berlin Film Festival spotlights music in
cinema, its director said in an interview. |
| Berlinale
chief Dieter Kosslick said the match-up of rock and pop royalty
with the big screen's hottest stars promised one of the glitziest
years on the red carpet in the event's 58-year history.
Luring Oscar winner Martin Scorsese and the self-proclaimed world's
greatest rock'n'roll band to Berlin for the premiere of their concert
film "Shine A Light" was a triumph even Kosslick first
thought was too good to be true."It's a major coup," the
59-year-old told AFP. "They had to trust us as a festival that
we would know how to handle a premiere of this calibre. Because
you can only imagine what will be going on that night on the red
carpet." "Shine A Light" will open the February 7-17
event.
Madonna will be in town with her directorial debut "Filth and
Wisdom", starring cult British actor Richard E. Grant, Roma
punk band Gogol Bordello and a cast of Balkan actors Kosslick said
"look like they walked off the set of an Emir Kusturica film".
The short feature will be showing in the Panorama section outside
the main competition.
He said it was that heady mix of glamour and spontaneity that drew
top-drawer talent to the frosty German capital in February.
"We've worked for years to build good relationships with Hollywood
-- both the big studios and the independents -- and that has paid
off," Kosslick said. |

| With a
pair of headphones slung round her neck, Madonna looks very much the
part as she directs her first short film Filth And Wisdom |
| Even
a seasoned showbiz hand like Madonna needs a little support when
she takes on a new venture. So her director husband Guy Ritchie
was on hand to pass on tips as the Queen of Pop clocked up a first:
directing a movie.
The 30-minute short Filth And Wisdom features a subject matter that
strays not too far from her area of expertise. The superstar singer
has revealed the film is based on her own life experiences, but
has otherwise kept details of the project hush hush. "I hate
to be a tease, but you know how I am," she told fans.
On the shoot in a London street market this week the Material Girl,
dressed in a casual green tracksuit teamed with a skull and crossbones
cap, was all business giving instructions from the director's chair.
Characters reportedly include an Indian chemist owner, a Jewish
businessman and a failed ballet dancer who takes up pole dancing.
Madonna is hoping filming will wrap by July when she aims to be
back in the recording studio. Meanwhile, her other half is set to
return to film-making with RocknRolla a low budget gangster flick
he has written and produced himself. |
