Tops Britney's Guinness Record |
|
| Pop star Madonna has been
awarded a Guinness World Record for being the highest
paid female singer. |
|
|
|
| |
The
star, famous for constantly re-inventing her image, knocked
singer Britney Spears from the top spot she had held since
2001.
It is thought Madonna made an estimated $50m (£26.7m)
in 2004.
Billboard magazine recently reported the singer broke another
record for having the highest earning tour for a female
performer.
Madonna's bank account is not the only one to have broken
records. |

World Tour: 41% Say Staged Crucifixion “Offensive” |
25% Report “Very
Unfavorable” Opinions of Pop Star
Never one to shy away from controversy, Madonna
is at it again with her current “Confessions”
world tour.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
During
one segment of her performance, the Material Girl sings
while suspended from a giant cross and wearing a crown
of thorns. The scene has prompted sharp responses
from the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches,
especially overseas, but generated lukewarm responses
among the American public.
Fifty-one percent (51%) of respondents to a recent Rasmussen
Reports survey about the pop star say they’ve read,
seen or heard about the segment; 45% have not (see crosstabs).
Forty-one percent (41%) of the 1,000 adults surveyed say
they consider the scene offensive. Thirty-two percent
(32%) disagree.
The singer claims that the staged crucifixion is not an
attempt to mock religion, but rather her “plea to
the audience to encourage mankind to help one another
and to see the world as a unified whole.”
A majority of survey respondents (55%) don’t buy
that explanation and believe the scene is meant solely
for publicity. Only 16% believe Madonna’s
explanation is sincere.
NBC, which plans to air a concert special in November
based on the “Confessions” tour, is deciding
whether to include footage of the crucifixion scene in
its broadcast. Sixty-six percent (66%) of those
surveyed say they would not watch a Madonna concert on
television and 21% say they would.
The majority of respondents do not classify themselves
as Madonna fans, which could account for their lack of
interest in her latest controversy. Fifty-six percent
(56%) report unfavorable opinions of the singer with 25%
saying they have “very unfavorable” opinions
of her. Thirty-two percent (32%) feel favorably
toward Madonna, but only 5% are at the highest extreme.
Madonna’s 60-date,
4-month tour wrapped up on September 21 in Japan.
“Confessions” was the highest-grossing tour
ever by a female artist, generating nearly $194 million
and attracting 1.2 million fans. |

3rd qtr, August sales top market consensus |
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -
Swedish fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz AB (HMb.ST:
Quote, Profile, Research) posted third-quarter pretax
profits just above market forecasts on Wednesday,
while its August like-for-like sales also beat expectations.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
H&M,
which brought in Madonna for its autumn fashion campaign,
reported a pretax profit of 3.77 billion Swedish crowns
($516 million) in the second quarter, against analysts'
average forecast of 3.60 billion in a Reuters poll and
3.32 billion in the same quarter last year.
Sales for comparable stores in August rose 5.0 percent
year-on-year, against a median forecast of 3.0 percent
and an average of 2.8 percent.
The key gross margin for the third quarter was 59.2 percent,
against a forecast of 58.4 percent and 58.8 percent in
the same period in 2005.
The margin was boosted 0.7 percent "mainly due to
a more efficient purchasing process that has led to lower
buying prices," H&M said in a statement.
But it added that price cuts had been greater in the third
quarter due to a higher inventory level at the start of
the period. This cut the margin by 0.3 percent, resulting
in an overall 0.4 percent rise in the margin from the
third quarter in 2005.
H&M said that its inventory level at the beginning
of August was "well-balanced both in volume and content."
The underwear-to-suit retailer said its plans for a separately
branded chain for men and women, to be launched in spring
2007, were on track, with around 10 stores due next year.
It expects to open 80 new H&M stores in the fourth
quarter to add to its 1,264 already open.
H&M in July said it was using Madonna to promote a
line of track suits, while it also designed a complete
wardrobe for her stage crew, part of a long-term agreement
with the singer. |

| While
finishing her world tour in Japan, Madonna took time out
from her busy schedule to shoot the video for her latest

whole new level and try using a platinum blonde bob wig
for this video. The result is everyone loved the wig so
much, that it made a cameo in the last two nights of the

Pop
queen MADONNA insists her horse-riding accident last year
(05) was a positive experience, because it made her aware
of how precious life is.
The fall saw the RAY OF LIGHT star break her collarbone,

about the frightening incident.
She says, "It was a wake-up call to appreciate my life,
to be more grateful for what I have.
"It reaffirms my continued aspirations to learn and

| NBC in
Compromise Between Catholic Church and Madonna to
Broadcast Actual Crucifixion |
|
| |
|
|
| |
LOS
ANGELES, Calif. -- NBC said today that it has come to a
compromise between Madonna and religious leaders offended
by her "climbing on a cross" during the scheduled
broadcast of a concert from her "Confessions"
tour. Rather than delete the scene, NBC has said they will
show an enhanced crucifixion segment in which Madonna will
actually be crucified.
Said NBC President Kevin Reilly, "This way Madonna
keeps her artistic freedom, and even gets some more, the
Catholic Church is completely mollified, and we keep our
advertisers, plus get a boatload more. It's a win, win,
win situation. I don't think I could have worked it out
any better with divine inspiration."
Madonna defended her original mock-crucifixion as not being
"anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous,"
but said a real crucifixion would be "much higher art."
The pop icon said she would have to re-organize her playlist,
however, since the performance of the ballad "Live
to Tell," in which she sings while wearing a crown
of thorns and silver cuffs attaching her to a 20-foot-high
mirrored cross will now obviously have to come last.
This final crucifixion also fits with Madonna's hopes to
dance out on top, not "hobble her way down like Cher,"
as Madonna is reported to have said recently. As the capstone
to her record-breaking Confessions Tour, the NBC event could
be a ratings bonanza that all but guarantees Madonna's place
in entertainment history.
Media analysts are wary that the hype will exceed the reality.
"We all remember Evel Knievel and the so-called Snake
River Gorge Jump," said Dr. Bryan Reeves of the Stanford
University Hyperbolic Media Project. "What a dud."
Following her final tour date in Tokyo on Thursday, Madonna
explained the intent behind her tour crucifixion performance.
"The many misinterpretations about my appearance on
the cross require I explain it myself once and for all.
"During my show, three of my dancers 'confess.' My
'confession' follows and takes place on a crucifix that
I ultimately come down from. This is not a mocking of the
church. It is no different than a person wearing a cross
or 'Taking Up the Cross' as it says in the Bible.
"I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today
he would be doing the same thing.
"Please do not pass judgment without seeing my show,
buying the DVD, or at least perusing my 'Sex' book."
Madonna's "Confessions Tour — Live from London"
is scheduled to air on NBC in November.
Madonna plans to go to Malawi for several weeks in November

| Show Madonna's
Confessions Tour Special |
|

|
|
| |
To:
Mr. Bob Wright chairman of NBC
As many of you know NBC is considering not airing the upcoming
Madonna special that is scheduled to be shown on NBC in
November due to the controversial Live to tell performance.
It appears that NBC is going to give into pressure from
the religious groups who have been condemning Madonna’s
show. Many of these people have never even seen the performance.
I like many of you have seen this performance and don’t
see anything wrong with it in fact I think it was a beautiful
performance that is in no way mocking the crucifixion or
any other aspect of any religion. Please join me in showing
support for Madonna and her show by signing this and letting
NBC know that there are a lot of people out there who want
the show broadcast and that we want Live to tell included. |

Madonna
and her Crew delivered an amazing, flawless end-of-tour
concert at the Tokyo Dome tonight.
The Queen of World performed again the second half of the
show with her bombshell wig on, and personally thanked all
her band, dancers, backing vocalists, crew and management
one-by-one.
Madonna did not walk down to meet the audience for this
last show, but the concert was marked by an entire series
of little treats and jokes.
The sound of the shofar at the begining of "Isaac"
was changed into a loud trumpet, Madonna's voice at the
end of "Paradise" was altered with a very weird
vocoder setting, and her dancers came out for the "Ray
of Light" dance routine wearing funny Power Rangers
masks.
It was again a night to remember and Japan proved once more
to be able to deliver unique performances. That said, as
we all know, the "Confessions Tour" is now over
and there's no chance to avoid being emotional about that. |

| Madonna's
'Confessions' Tour Sets Record |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Madonna
will wrap her Confessions tour tomorrow (Sept. 21) at the
Tokyo Dome as the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist.
Although final numbers are not all in, tour producer Arthur
Fogel puts the tally at $193.7 million from 60 shows that
drew nearly 1.2 million in paid attendance.
That gross narrowly puts Madonna over Cher's benchmark of
$192.5 million. However, it took Cher an endurance-testing
273 shows between June 2002 and April 2005 to reach that
mark on her marathon Farewell tour.
"Madonna has yet again delivered an incredible show
for her fans, and the success of the tour is the ultimate
statement," Fogel tells Billboard.com. "She absolutely
belongs at number one."
Madonna's Confessions tour followed the same model of the
$125 million-grossing Re-Invention tour in 2004 and the
$75 million-grossing Drowned World tour in 2001.
Rather than visit 100 global markets a la mega acts like
the Rolling Stones and U2, Madonna opted to play multiple
nights in a limited number of major international locales.
The strategy has led to a staggering $400 million in ticket
sales in just six years. |

has issued a statement to Peter Howson |
|
| |
|
|
| |
In
the last few days Madonna has issued a statement to Peter
Howson detailing that she likes Peter's work very much
and is happy for him to use her image in it.
We will publish Madonna's full statement within the next
few days when Peter instructs us to release it to
the general public.
Peter Howson, famed for his striking religious paintings,
has created a string of new works celebrating Scotland's
patron saint. The City Art Centre on Market Street will
be playing host to the exhibition by the artist for more
than three months.
Mr Howson is a born-again Christian who famously produced
nude portraits of Madonna and has also painted the Queen
and football star Henrik Larsson.

| Madonna
pays a few bob for new blonde look |
|
|
|
| |
 |
From
strawberry blonde and permed, to Gothic black and straight,
there are not many hairstyles that Madonna hasn't tried.
Now, with a dramatic new platinum blonde bob, the 48-year-old
singer has undergone yet another reinvention.
While the shade is reminiscent of her 1990s Material Girl
heyday, the blunt-edge cut is different to anything she
has ever previously had.
Costing a cool £750, it is, however, a little more
pricey than the average cut n' blow-dry. |
|
|
| |
"Madonna
wanted to do something spectacular to mark turning 48 last
month," said a source close to the star. "There
is no way she is going to grow old gracefully.
"The cut had been planned for quite a while and was
by no means a spontaneous decision. Madonna knows she is
in as good a shape as ever and facially barely looks a day
older than she did when she first started out.
"As a result she wasn't in the least daunted by the
prospect of returning to a hair colour that she first had
nearly 15 years ago.
"It's not the most forgiving of shades, but Madonna
looks great - and she is delighted with the end result."
The performer, who is on the final leg of her Confessions
world tour, showed off her new look at the X-Static Process
photography exhibition at the Louis Vuitton store in Tokyo
yesterday.
Celebrity hairdresser Andy LeCompte is thought to be the
man behind the edgy style.
The Beverly Hills-based crimper has been accompanying Madonna
throughout her gruelling world tour, washing and styling
her hair before each and every stage performance.
Wearing a black satin zip-up jacket and scarlett red lipstick,
the mother-of-two teamed her platinum locks with a heavy
lashing of dark eye make-up.
While it is not known just who, or what, the inspiration
behind Madonna's latest haircut is, intriguingly it is remarkably
similar to the bob recently revealed by Victoria Beckham.
Of course, ardent Madonna fans have grown accustomed to
their idol's many changes of hairstyle.
Naturally auburn, she sported a zebra-like blonde and dark
crop in 1984 when she released her first single Like A Virgin.
Five years later she returned to her roots once again for
her controversial Like A Prayer video, in which she staged
a mock crucifixion.
After that she was a bottle blonde for nearly ten years,
with hues ranging from ice-white to bohemian-inspired strawberry
tones.
For her Ray Of Light album, she dyed her tresses a vivid
jet black colour, as she first began dabbling with the Kabbalah
faith.
But in 2000, with the release of the album Music, she returned
to long blonde curls.
Her most recent hairstyle has been a 1970's, Farrah Fawcett-esque
feathered number. |

NBC TV undecided about Madonna mock crucifixion |
|
|
| |
LOS
ANGELES (Reuters) - The NBC television network is still
making up its mind about whether it will allow pop star
Madonna to stage a mock crucifixion on its airwaves as
part of her upcoming prime-time concert special.
The 48-year-old entertainer has made the crucifixion stunt,
in which she performs while suspended on a giant cross
wearing a crown of thorns, a centerpiece of her global
"Confessions" tour.
Her stage act drew storms of protest from the Roman Catholic
Church and Russian Orthodox Church during recent performances
in Rome and Moscow, with church leaders condemning the
mock crucifixion as blasphemy.
But executives at NBC, owned by the General Electric Co.
will wait for makers of her concert special to submit
the production for review before deciding whether to allow
the mock crucifixion to air.
"We're awaiting the delivery of it, and once we've
seen it in its entirety, we'll make a decision,"
an NBC spokeswoman told Reuters on Thursday. The program
is slated to air in November, but no specific date has
been set.
Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, had no comment on the issue,
according to an assistant in his office.
In July, when the network first unveiled plans for the
Madonna concert special, NBC Entertainment President Kevin
Reilly gave mixed signals about how much artistic freedom
Madonna would be given. The mock crucifixion was known
then to be a central part of her stage act.
"She's not revising her act," he told a gathering
of TV critics at the time. "We've discussed what
content will be in and what is out, and we've come to
a healthy place that represents her show but is appropriate
for television."
He later added: "She's going to do her show, and
we'll decide which numbers are in the special and which
are not. And that's whole numbers. We're not going to
make piece-meal edits." |

WBIR addresses concerns over Madonna concert special |
|
|
| |
WBIR
and the NBC network are responding to concerns over an
upcoming Madonna concert special.
Madonna has caused international controversy among many
religious leaders over part of her stage show for the
her "Confessions" world tour. During the performance,
the singer depicts a crucifixion where she hangs from
a cross wearing a crown of thorns.
There's been some concerns here in East Tennessee over
the Madonna concert special. After hearing from the public,
WBIR's management asked the network for more information
about the concert, and here's what they told us:
"There have been many questions and concerns over
whether the portion of the Madonna concert which includes
her singing on a cross will air on the network. NBC is
awaiting delivery of the special and once we see it in
its entirety we will make a final decision."
In light of NBC's statement, here's what our President
and General Manager Jeff Lee had to say:
"We will await the NBC decision before determining
whether this program is appropriate for the Knoxville
market. When a decision is made, we will announce it during
our newscasts. Thank you."
The Madonna "Confessions" tour concert special
is scheduled to air on NBC in November. |

AFA Demands NBC Cancel Madonna |
|
|
| |
The
American Family Association (AFA) has asked NBC to cancel
its Madonna special, which is scheduled for broadcast
during the November sweeps.
"I write to ask you to cancel this program which
makes a mockery of the crucifixion of Christ,” AFA
chairman Donald E. Wildmon told NBC chairman Robert Wright
in the letter.
Reportedly, Madonna will appear on a crucifix during the
NBC program, an act she has done during previous concerts.
"Making mockery of the crucifixion of Christ has
been a trademark of Madonna for many years. I am sure
you recall that in 1989 she had a video for the hit song
‘Like A Prayer.’ The video featured burning
crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna — representing
Jesus — freeing a saint from his sexual repression
by seducing him. This is the same Madonna who once said,
‘Crucifixes are sexy because there’s a naked
man on them,’” Wildmon wrote.
Wildmon told Knight that there are millions of Christians
who consider the crucifixion of Christ as the supreme
act of a God who, because of His love, was willing to
endure that crucifixion for the forgiveness of our sins.
He encouraged individuals to call their local NBC affiliates
and ask them not to air the special if NBC refuses to
cancel it. |

BURBANK
(September 18, 2006) -- NBC's November Sweeps schedule includes
crucifixion footage from Madonna's "Confessions"
tour.
The spectacle, which occurs during her chart-topping "Live
To Tell," features Madonna donning a crown of sparkling
thorns and descending to the stage while mounted on a mirrored
cross - evoking images of both the biblical and disco eras.
"We viewed it and didn't see it as being inappropriate,"
NBC said.
The crucifixion act has been a source of controversy in
Madonna's tour abroad.
The next and final stop of Madonna's worldwide tour is Tokyo
where she will have concerts on September 20 & 21. |

NEW
YORK: Music videos from artists like Madonna, Red Hot Chili
Peppers and Sean Paul will be legally available for the
first time on YouTube, a popular online video sharing site,
after signing its first commercial partnership with Warner
Music Group.
YouTube, which has over 100 million video viewed everyday,
and Warner Music, the world's fourth biggest record company,
said on Monday that the pact would help Warner distribute
music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews
and original programming.
The companies said YouTube users would also be able to incorporate
music from Warner's catalog into the videos they create
and upload. Music videos belonging to Warner Music and other
record companies are regularly uploaded to YouTube by its
users but usually without permission from the labels.
The partnership, which has been in discussions for months,
was signed late on Sunday afternoon. It comes just days
after Universal Music Group, which is owned by Vivendi,
described YouTube and News Corp.'s social networking site
