| The 12,000-strong
crowd at MADONNA's London concert last night (16AUG06)
treated her to a rendition of HAPPY BIRTHDAY to
celebrate her turning 48. Midway through her performance
the backing singers urged the crowd to serenade
her, stopping the MATERIAL GIRL dead in her tracks.
Stunned, she said afterwards, "I cannot think
of a better way to spend my birthday than with you
tonight." Madonna then said her birthday wish
would be for world peace. The Wembley Arena gig
concluded the London leg of the singer's world tour. |

| News of Madonna's
groundbreaking partnership with H&M Clothing stores
is everywhere now! It was just a few short weeks ago that
it was still a secret, while Madonna & her crew were
in LA posing for the photoshoot that will soon be all
over the world. Even though everyone was there to work,
no one could stop Madonna and the crew from having a great
time hanging out together! The DJ was setting the mood
with awesome music. The dancers were all looking through
the cool clothes and trying on funky outfits before the
shoot. Special ICON photograper and brilliant Confessions
Tour dancer Sofia Boutella was snapping pics of all the

She wants to help Malawi. But will people buy the
mistress of reinvention as a philanthropist?
|

| |
| Malawi is a
Pennsylvania - size country in southeast Africa that has
four things in abundance that the West doesn%u2019t much
covet: AIDS, malaria, drought and tobacco (its major crop,
now not so lucrative). On the plus side, it has a functioning
democracy and not full-blown war. That may explain why,
to date, Malawi has not attracted much attention from
the rest of the world. But that%u2019s about to change.
Malawi will soon be hit by a force that has thrown far
more robust countries into chaos. Her name is Madonna.
And being Madonna, she%u2019s not going into Malawi quietly.
She has already promised to raise at least $3 million
to fund programs that would mostly help orphans there
(another thing Malawi has in excess, thanks to AIDS. Of
its population of about 13 million, 1 million are children
who have lost at least one parent). Ground will soon be
broken on an orphan-care center, which aims initially
to feed and educate at least 1,000 children a day. She%u2019s
financing%u2212to the tune of about $1 million%u2212a
documentary about the plight of Malawian children. And
she has met with Bill Clinton to see whether they can
work together to bring the low-cost medicines for the
area, as well as partnered with several other aid organizations.
Given that Madonna has never actually set foot in Africa
(husband Guy Ritchie went earlier this year), the whole
enterprise has a pungent aroma of a coordinated act of
publicity. But one of the partnerships she has formed
is with developing-world economic guru Jeffrey Sachs (who
suffers no dilettantes): an agreement to provide $1.5
million for one of his millennium villages. They want
to end poverty in one community%u2212in this case the
village of Gumulira, outside the capital Lilongwe%u2212by
simultaneously improving the health, agricultural productivity
and education of its people. |

held in New York on August 31.

Madonna’s involvement with Raising Malawi
began indirectly through her series of children’s
books. The impetus to write these books (such
as The English Roses and Mr. Peabody’s
Apples) came from her desire to communicate
practical, spiritual wisdom in a way that would
help kids make smarter choices in their lives.
This successful endeavor led her to join
forces with an organization with the same
goal of empowerment, called Spirituality
for Kids (SFK). SFK is a unique educational
program for children and families from at-risk
communities that teaches them how to overcome
the challenges of poverty, violence, drug
abuse, and a host of other social ills.
Madonna has now worked with SFK for many
years, promoting and supporting its programs
to children and parents all around the globe.
With Raising Malawi, she is taking it to
the next level by bringing this life-saving
wisdom to kids in areas of the world that
would never find it on their own.
She is spearheading the construction of
The Raising Malawi – Consol Homes
Orphan Care Center, a place where children
can come to eat, learn, read, and play in
a safe, nurturing environment. This will
also be where the children will be taught
the principles of an SFK-based curriculum
that is being co-created with local Malawian
teachers to address the specific challenges
in Africa.
Madonna’s universal appeal touches
children of all backgrounds everywhere in
the world. Raising Malawi is delighted and
honored to have Madonna working on this
vital and historic initiative. |
